Erectile Dysfunction Q & A

What are the symptoms of erectile dysfunction?

If you have erectile dysfunction, you may have at least one of the following problems.

  • Difficulty achieving erections
  • Difficulty sustaining erections
  • Reduced sexual desire

Although many men might have these difficulties occasionally, erectile dysfunction is different because it’s a persistent pattern that requires support and treatment.

Why do I have erectile dysfunction?

There are many causes of erectile dysfunction. If you suffer from chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol, or Parkinson's disease, you may develop erectile dysfunction as a side effect of the condition.

Obesity, depression, anxiety, low testosterone, and even certain medications can also cause erectile dysfunction. Sometimes, erectile dysfunction is just one of the problems caused by a serious illness.

One thing that doesn't cause erectile dysfunction is age. But, you're more vulnerable to many different health problems as you age, and that can increase your risk for erectile dysfunction.

How can I overcome erectile dysfunction?

Dr. Chung considers the cause of your erectile dysfunction and then works with you to determine the most effective treatment. Dr. Chung always prioritizes noninvasive and minimally invasive solutions whenever possible. Some options include:

Oral medication

Phosphodiesterase inhibitors are popular erectile dysfunction treatments because they're taken orally on-demand when you're ready for intimacy. This type of drug can last for anywhere from several hours up to 36 hours, and they take effect in 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the drug.

Injection therapy

Injection therapy offers reliable erections within around 20 minutes of injection. Dr. Chung teaches you how to inject the medication in his office. After that, you can use an ultrafine syringe to inject the medication into the skin on the side of your penis, shortly before you’re planning to be intimate.

Penile prosthesis

A penile prosthesis is implanted within your penis to help you get erections when you want. An inflatable pump device creates an erection when you depress the pump that’s under your scrotum. To end the erection, you press the release valve on top of the pump. The system is entirely concealed in your genitals.

Another option is an implanted semirigid penile implant. You bend the rod upward to create an erection and then back downward afterward.  As with pumps, implants are completely concealed in the penis.

Dr. Chung is here to help you through the frustration and embarrassment of erectile dysfunction. For solutions that work, call Illinois Urologic Health Surgeons, or book an appointment online today.
